Congratulations to @msa.clayton, winners of Best Marketing Initiative at the Student Experience Network Awards 2025 for their bold and reimagined Safe and Sexy Week 2024 campaign.

Building on the momentum of their “Feminine Rage” event, MSA completely refreshed Safe and Sexy Week with a provocative, playful, and student-led marketing approach. The campaign aimed to reclaim and reframe conversations around sexuality, consent, pleasure, and empowerment in a way that resonated authentically with students.

At the heart of the campaign was a strong creative strategy centred on sex-positivity, intersectionality, and real student voices. Rather than relying on stock imagery, MSA produced original visuals through a student-led photoshoot, featuring real students and intentionally designed creative direction. This approach fostered a sense of ownership, authenticity, and connection across the student community.

The campaign was rolled out across multiple channels including social media, digital screens, print assets, and merchandise, supported by teaser content and countdowns designed to build anticipation and drive engagement. The result was a highly visible, conversation-starting campaign that significantly increased both attendance and online interaction.

More than just promotion, Safe and Sexy Week 2024 demonstrated the power of values-led, student-driven marketing to create meaningful engagement and cultural impact on campus.

The @umsuunimelb is going pink to go green with its Plates4Change initiative!

As part of its sustainability efforts, UMSU has introduced thousands of bright pink reusable plates across its food services, helping phase out single-use containers and embed reuse into everyday campus events.

In its first four weeks, the initiative has been rolled out across Activities’ Bites and Bustles, Graduate Dinner Clubs, and other activations, serving over 1,300 meals with reusable dishware and preventing an equal number of single-use items from going to landfill. During OWeek@UMSU, 2,263 reusable bowls were washed over three days, diverting 34kg of waste, around 5.6 wheelie bins.

Supported by the University of Melbourne’s Sustainable Action Program Green Impact Grant and delivered with Green My Plate, the program uses a closed-loop system to replace disposable serviceware with a scalable reuse model.

Plates4Change is helping shift event culture towards reuse by tackling one of the largest sources of campus waste and embedding more sustainable practices into student life.

We love seeing members lead practical sustainability initiatives that improve the student experience while reducing environmental impact!

In this episode of SEN Insights, we chat with Clare Walsh and Tayla Styles from the @ucsa_nz in Christchurch, New Zealand, whose ORI ’25 program won Best Orientation Initiative at the Student Experience Network Awards 2025.

Claire and Taylor share how UCSA has reimagined orientation as a multi-week, year-round student success strategy rather than a single “welcome week” of events. They discuss how they balance large-scale festivals with targeted cohort experiences, and how early engagement before students arrive on campus helps set the foundation for belonging and connection.

They also explore how UCSA measures success beyond attendance numbers, focusing instead on connection outcomes, student feedback, and ongoing engagement with services throughout the year.

From student-led communication and rapid feedback loops to strong university partnerships and culturally specific programming, this episode highlights how intentional design can transform orientation into a powerful driver of student experience and retention.

Congratulations to @ucsa_nz , winners of Best Orientation Initiative at the Student Experience Network Awards 2025 for their standout program, ORI ’25.

ORI ’25 was designed to welcome new and returning students with a vibrant, inclusive start to the academic year, with a strong focus on early engagement, safety, and connection.

To strengthen the transition into university life, UCSA introduced new initiatives such as Fresher 5 and The Foundry Beer Garden, providing safe, structured social spaces during the critical move-in period. These activations helped students connect early and build friendships in a safe environment.

Across three weeks, ORI ’25 delivered 19 events, including cohort-specific welcomes for international, postgraduate, and Rainbow students, alongside large-scale activations and alcohol-free options. This created a balanced and accessible program that reflected the diversity of the student community and ensured multiple pathways for engagement.

The program was delivered through strong collaboration across UCSA teams, UC departments, halls of residence, and external partners. Targeted messaging through halls and university channels ensured students were reached at key moments, particularly in the early weeks when engagement is most critical.

Importantly, ORI ’25 also delivered strong financial outcomes, achieving improved commercial performance and a surplus.

At its core, ORI ’25 was about creating a welcoming environment where every student could feel connected, supported, and part of the university community from day one.

✨ Is your Orientation program setting students up for success?
The Best Orientation Initiative category celebrates inclusive, engaging starts to the student journey, from festivals to cohort programs shaping the experience from day one.
