We're proud to announce a new commercial partnersh We're proud to announce a new commercial partnership with SureScreen Diagnostics (Australia), supporting a shared commitment to student safety, harm minimisation, and drink-spiking prevention.

Through the partnership, SEN and SDA will work collaboratively to support the rollout of the Multi-Lined Rapid Beverage Test Cassette (GHB/KET/BZO) and Forensic Collection Bar Kits across university licensed venues, student unions, campus bars, and student events throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Importantly, SEN and SDA will also work together to advocate with State, Territory, Federal, and New Zealand Governments to support pilot trials within Safe Night Precincts and university towns, helping better protect students and patrons in off-campus nightlife settings.

The partnership reflects a proactive, education-led and evidence-based approach to improving patron welfare, supporting safer nightlife environments, and equipping communities with practical harm-minimisation tools.

We look forward to working together with our members, government, and industry peak bodies, to drive meaningful change across our communities.

This week marks National Reconciliation Week, a ti This week marks National Reconciliation Week, a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in meaningful and lasting ways.

National Reconciliation Week begins with National Sorry Day on 26 May, a day to acknowledge and remember the Stolen Generations and the ongoing impacts of past government policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families and communities. It is an important opportunity to reflect on the truth of our history and the role it plays in shaping reconciliation today.

The 2026 National Reconciliation Week theme, All In, is a powerful reminder that reconciliation requires the commitment of all Australians. It challenges us to move beyond words and take action to build stronger relationships, greater understanding and a more inclusive future.

Across the Student Experience Network, we are proud to see members going All In through events, educational initiatives, cultural activities, storytelling and conversations that bring campus communities together. These initiatives create opportunities to learn, listen and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and perspectives while fostering connection and belonging on campus.

As a network committed to enhancing the student experience, we recognise the important role our members play in supporting reconciliation through action, education and community building. We thank them for the meaningful work they continue to do and encourage everyone to take time this week to reflect, learn and consider how they can be All In for reconciliation.

In this episode, Paul chats with governance expert and @cprgroup_ Managing Director Michael Connelly about the human side of leadership, governance, and organisational sustainability in student associations and community organisations.

Michael reflects on his journey into governance consulting and shares why helping people, not just organisations, has always been at the centre of his work. Paul and Michael explore the challenges facing modern student leadership, from balancing advocacy with business responsibility, to improving governance structures, board capability, and continuity between elected terms.

The conversation also dives into the importance of asking questions, building strong systems, and creating organisations that thrive beyond individual leaders. Along the way, Michael shares insights on volunteer leadership, organisational culture, student representation, and why the best leaders focus less on being heroes and more on leaving lasting foundations for others to build upon.

Congratulations to @anustudents, winner of Best Advocacy Initiative at the Student Experience Network Awards 2025 for their impactful campaign, Guilty by Absence: When a Parking Fine Becomes a Criminal Record at ANU.

After uncovering that more than 30 students per month were being criminally prosecuted over unpaid parking fines without direct notification, ANUSA took action to expose and challenge a deeply flawed system impacting student welfare, employment opportunities, and visa outcomes.

Despite repeated attempts to work directly with the university to improve communication processes, the issue persisted. ANUSA responded through creative legal advocacy, manually monitoring court listings, contacting affected students, offering legal support, and advocating in court to help prevent convictions.

The initiative also leveraged the power of student media and public advocacy, working with student media outlet Woroni and national media outlets to raise awareness and increase pressure for systemic change.

The campaign directly prevented 74 students from receiving criminal convictions for minor parking offences, protecting them from potentially serious impacts on employment, visas, and future opportunities. Today, ANUSA continues to monitor court listings monthly, ready to step in and support students if needed.

Through persistence, legal expertise, and student-centred advocacy, the campaign highlighted the importance of fairness, transparency, and institutional accountability in supporting students.

Congratulations to @rmitstudentlife & @rmit_rusu, winners of Best Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Initiative at the Student Experience Network Awards 2025 for the impactful We Belong – Beyond Accessibility Art Project.

Created through a collaboration between RMIT Creative Student Life and RMIT University Student Union, the initiative used art to foster belonging, accessibility, allyship, and inclusion for d/Deaf and Disabled students beyond the classroom.

At the heart of the project was Metropolis, a large-scale collaborative artwork co-created by emerging artist Rachel Shugg and RMIT students. Through immersive installations, students explored themes of accessibility, identity, and belonging while contributing directly to the final piece.

Accessibility and co-creation were embedded throughout the initiative, including Auslan interpretation, low sensory environments, and student-led consultation. The project also expanded conversations around disability and inclusion through roundtables, social campaigns, and creative programming.

Its impact extended beyond campus through participation in Alter State Festival at Arts Centre Melbourne, where emerging student artists presented works imagining the year 2075 from Disabled community perspectives.

More than an art project, We Belong demonstrated how creative collaboration can amplify underrepresented voices and strengthen community connection.

A big congratulations to @tusa.org.au on the launch of its first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Reflect.

This important milestone reflects TUSA’s commitment to truth-telling, cultural safety, and building genuine relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The RAP acknowledges the importance of learning from the past while taking meaningful action towards a more inclusive and culturally informed future for students and the wider university community.

Built around the pillars of Relationships, Respect, Opportunities and Governance, the plan outlines practical steps to strengthen partnerships with Aboriginal organisations, support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and ensure Aboriginal voices help shape decision-making across the organisation.

We commend TUSA for this thoughtful and student-led commitment to reconciliation, and for recognising that this work requires ongoing action, listening and collaboration.

In this episode, Paul chats with CEO Josh Gilligan to unpack the creation of the new Swinburne Student Association and the journey behind one of the sector’s most significant student governance transformations.

Josh shares his path from student leadership and local government, including becoming the youngest ever Mayor of Wyndham, to leading the merger of Swinburne Student Union and Student Life into a single student-led organisation. Paul and Josh explore the challenges and opportunities of moving from a split services model to a hybrid governance structure designed to amplify student voice while strengthening collaboration with university leadership.

The conversation dives into the realities of organisational change, from building trust with university executives and navigating constitutional reform, to managing staffing transitions, culture shifts and the pressures of launching a brand-new entity. Josh also reflects on the first 12 months of operation, the lessons learned, and how the new model is already improving student engagement and outcomes at scale.

Congratulations to @rmitstudentlife, winners of Best Welfare & Wellbeing Initiative at the Student Experience Network Awards 2025 for the impactful Kirrip Peer Support Program.

Created to support international students navigating the transition to university life, the Kirrip Peer Support Program was designed to address feelings of isolation, uncertainty, and disconnection through meaningful peer connection and community-building.

As part of RMIT’s preventative approach to student mental health and wellbeing, the program provides low-barrier, peer-led spaces where students can build confidence, form connections, and increase awareness of available support services. By fostering belonging and encouraging help-seeking behaviours, Kirrip helps students feel more supported both socially and academically.

A key strength of the initiative is its focus on student voice and empowerment. Through peer-led engagement and leadership opportunities, students are encouraged to take ownership of their university experience while developing confidence, global citizenship, and employability skills.

At its core, the Kirrip Peer Support Program demonstrates the power of connection and community in supporting student wellbeing and creating a more inclusive university environment.

Recently, the team at La Trobe University Student Union had the opportunity to visit Foodbank Victoria for a tour of their new warehouse and to learn more about the vital work they do behind the scenes.

The visit provided valuable insight into the scale, coordination and impact of Foodbank Victoria’s operations, from sourcing and storing food, to supporting organisations across the state. Their work plays a key role in helping LTSU stock the LTSU Food Bank as part of the Feed La Trobe program, supporting students experiencing food insecurity on campus.

Strong partnerships like these are helping create more supportive, connected and equitable campus communities, demonstrating the impact that collaboration can have on student wellbeing!
