SESSION OVERVIEW
Across Australia’s tertiary sector, many students and staff leaders silently navigate pressure to prove themselves, minimise difference and “perform belonging” in order to fit in. In increasingly multicultural campus environments, alongside rising post-COVID loneliness and disconnection, these invisible pressures can quietly impact wellbeing, participation, leadership confidence, and community connection.
Inspired by Daisy Wu’s 2025 TEDx talk “Stop Fighting Stereotypes, Start Being You,” this interactive workshop explores how internalised stereotypes, social pressure, and over-adaptation affect authentic participation and belonging within student and staff communities.
Designed for student experience professionals and leaders, the session examines the deeper human dynamics beneath engagement and inclusion initiatives. It invites participants to reflect on how institutional culture, communication norms, and unconscious expectations may unintentionally reinforce pressure to conform.
Using Daisy’s 3A Framework (Awareness – Attitude – Action), participants will learn how to:
– recognise hidden barriers that prevent authentic participation and connection (Awareness),
– reframe difference and vulnerability as strengths rather than liabilities (Attitude),
– and implement practical micro-actions that strengthen psychological safety, engagement, and belonging at both individual and team level (Action).
Through storytelling, reflection, peer dialogue, and practical activities, attendees will explore strategies to foster more human-centred and psychologically safe environments where students and staff feel seen, valued, and empowered to contribute authentically.
Participants will leave with practical insights and immediately applicable strategies that can support wellbeing, engagement, and belonging across diverse campus communities.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Recognise the hidden pressures that influence belonging, participation, and identity within increasingly multicultural campus environments
- Apply the 3A Framework (Awareness, Attitude, Action) to create more psychologically safe and inclusive workplace culture and student experiences
- Develop practical strategies to strengthen authentic connection, engagement, and leadership participation across student communities and staff teams
