About the Role
The RUSU Compass Service is designed to provide welfare information, referrals and support to RMIT students. The service includes Compass Drop-In Centres where students can seek guidance without booking an appointment. The Compass service and programs are well estblished. This position is a temporary 18 month contract (maternity leave temp role ). Your skills in social work, youth work, volunteer supervision, advocacy and support will be utilised to assist students in a complex and challenging higher education environment. In this role you will:
- Support – Staff the Compass Drop in Centre, providing, information, advice and referals to assist students who present with a broad range of welfare and well-being issues.
- Lead & Mentor – Support and mentor the dedicated RMIT Social Work, Youth Work and Psychology students who volunteer with Compass.
- Reach Out – Work with RUSU staff and elected student reps to plan, run and deliver information/outreach events at RMIT fosuing on food security, mental health and well-being.
- Create Change – Identify key welfare issues affecting students and contribute to responses and campaigns.

Qualifications & Key Requirements
- Applicants MUST have a tertiary degree in Social Work or Youth Work with at least two years relevant experience in a comparable role, preferably in the community/education /youth sector.
- Knowledge of relevant polices affecting students’ welfare and equity and the impact of these on their ability to undertake successful study.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver successful and engaging student/community based outreach programs and events including trouble shooting, problem-solving and lateral thinking.
- Experience resourcing, supervising , mentoring and supporting volunteers.
- Sound knowledge of community services and professional referrals processes.
- High-level interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with people from a range of organisations and backgrounds.
