SAS (Student Advocacy & Support) is a free, independent, confidential support service available to all currently enrolled University of Queensland students. SAS operates independently through the UQ Student Union and is separate from the University itself, meaning advice and support are student-centred and not tied to university administrative structures.
What you’ll do
As a Generalist in the SAS team, you will make a difference in the lives and university experience of UQ students. You will help students by providing high-quality advice in relation to:
- Academics,
- Welfare, and
- Employment-related matters
This role involves:
- Provide advice, advocacy, and casework support to students via face-to-face, phone, email, and online platforms.
- Assist students with academic matters including appeals, progression and exclusion, misconduct, grievances, exams, remarks, and discrimination/harassment.
- Provide welfare and job-prep support including budgeting, financial stress, housing, resume writing, interview preparation, and general wellbeing.
- Deliver education, welfare, employment, and international student advocacy, information, referrals, and support.
- Equip students to advocate for themselves with UQ faculties, committees, boards, and relevant stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Legal Services and refer matters as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate case notes, documentation, and records.
You’ll also engage in other duties, including:
- Build and maintain strong knowledge of UQ policies, procedures, statutes, and student-facing rules.
- Maintain awareness of community support services and referral pathways.
- Monitor sector trends relating to student welfare, wellbeing, equity, access, and education policy.
- Contribute to reports, submissions, and position statements based on emerging trends and issues.
- Contribute to and lead service improvement projects.
- Develop and maintain self-help resources and preventative tools.
- Assist in the design and delivery of workshops, clinics, events, outreach activities, and campaigns.
- Support broader UQU and departmental initiatives as required.

You are a motivated and empathetic professional who is passionate about student advocacy and equity. You are confident navigating complex policies, enjoy problem-solving, and are comfortable supporting students through challenging situations.
You will have:
- Completed Bachelor’s degree (or higher), or equivalent experience.
- Background in social work, welfare, psychology, wellbeing, or advocacy is highly desirable.
- Experience working with complex policies and procedures.
- Research experience is an advantage.
