We’re excited to welcome Megan Campbell from @latrobeuni to present at SENCON 2026 - BELONG!

In her interactive workshop, The Hook Up: Messaging to Strengthen Safety, Health and Community Through Creative Research Translation, Megan will share how La Trobe University is using creative, student-focused sexual and reproductive health messaging to foster safety, reduce stigma, and strengthen students' sense of belonging.

Drawing on the success of The Hook Up initiative, attendees will explore how contemporary research can be translated into engaging, inclusive, and relatable resources that resonate with students in an increasingly crowded communication landscape. Through practical examples and hands-on activities, participants will gain strategies for developing strengths-based messaging that supports health promotion, gender-based violence prevention, and student wellbeing.

This is a fantastic session for anyone interested in student wellbeing, health promotion, communication strategy and creating campus environments where students truly belong.

We can’t wait for you to hear from Megan at SENCON 2026!

In this special panel episode of SEN Insights, Paul talks with leading experts, advocates, researchers and industry representatives to explore the growing challenge of drink spiking and what it means for student communities, campus venues and those responsible for student safety and wellbeing.

Together, the panel examines emerging trends in drink spiking, the barriers to reporting and detection, and the impact on victim survivors. Drawing on research, lived experience and industry expertise, they discuss how education, training, technology and collaboration can strengthen prevention and response efforts.

The episode also explores new innovations in rapid drink testing technology, including how these tools may support prevention, evidence preservation and incident response, while highlighting the importance of training, clear protocols and cross-sector collaboration.

For student experience professionals, the conversation offers valuable insights into creating safer social environments, strengthening support pathways and fostering a culture where students feel confident reporting incidents and seeking help.

Joining the discussion are Troy W. Stewart (Managing Director of SureScreen Diagnostics (Australia), George Newham (Head of Science at SureScreen Diagnostics), Dr Tim Boyle (Chief Executive Officer of ARCS Australia), Sarah Williams (Chief Executive Officer and Founder of What Were You Wearing? - Australia), Brittany Lauga (Former Queensland MP and Victim Survivor Advocate), Sophie Watson (WIN News Journalist and Victim Survivor Advocate), Associate Professor Dr Lata Gautam (Anglia Ruskin University, UK), and Craig Kidd (Chair of the Albury Liquor Accord) who could not attend but played a significant role in this discussion.

Strong student advocacy starts with listening to s Strong student advocacy starts with listening to students and backing their experiences with evidence.

The @latrobestudentunion has recently released 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐮𝐭: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐞, a report examining how parking costs are affecting students' ability to access campus and participate in university life. Based on student feedback, the report highlights the financial pressures faced by commuters, particularly those with limited public transport options, and explores the broader impact on attendance, wellbeing, and educational access.

The report found that many students rely on driving to campus, with a significant number indicating they would attend more frequently if parking were more affordable. The findings have sparked important conversations about cost-of-living pressures and equitable access to higher education.

This is a great example of member-led research driving meaningful advocacy and ensuring student voices are heard on issues that directly impact the student experience.

We're proud to announce a new commercial partnersh We're proud to announce a new commercial partnership with SureScreen Diagnostics (Australia), supporting a shared commitment to student safety, harm minimisation, and drink-spiking prevention.

Through the partnership, SEN and SDA will work collaboratively to support the rollout of the Multi-Lined Rapid Beverage Test Cassette (GHB/KET/BZO) and Forensic Collection Bar Kits across university licensed venues, student unions, campus bars, and student events throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Importantly, SEN and SDA will also work together to advocate with State, Territory, Federal, and New Zealand Governments to support pilot trials within Safe Night Precincts and university towns, helping better protect students and patrons in off-campus nightlife settings.

The partnership reflects a proactive, education-led and evidence-based approach to improving patron welfare, supporting safer nightlife environments, and equipping communities with practical harm-minimisation tools.

This week marks National Reconciliation Week, a ti This week marks National Reconciliation Week, a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in meaningful and lasting ways.

National Reconciliation Week begins with National Sorry Day on 26 May, a day to acknowledge and remember the Stolen Generations and the ongoing impacts of past government policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families and communities. It is an important opportunity to reflect on the truth of our history and the role it plays in shaping reconciliation today.

The 2026 National Reconciliation Week theme, All In, is a powerful reminder that reconciliation requires the commitment of all Australians. It challenges us to move beyond words and take action to build stronger relationships, greater understanding and a more inclusive future.

Across the Student Experience Network, we are proud to see members going All In through events, educational initiatives, cultural activities, storytelling and conversations that bring campus communities together. These initiatives create opportunities to learn, listen and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and perspectives while fostering connection and belonging on campus.

As a network committed to enhancing the student experience, we recognise the important role our members play in supporting reconciliation through action, education and community building. We thank them for the meaningful work they continue to do and encourage everyone to take time this week to reflect, learn and consider how they can be All In for reconciliation.

In this episode, Paul chats with governance expert and @cprgroup_ Managing Director Michael Connelly about the human side of leadership, governance, and organisational sustainability in student associations and community organisations.

Michael reflects on his journey into governance consulting and shares why helping people, not just organisations, has always been at the centre of his work. Paul and Michael explore the challenges facing modern student leadership, from balancing advocacy with business responsibility, to improving governance structures, board capability, and continuity between elected terms.

The conversation also dives into the importance of asking questions, building strong systems, and creating organisations that thrive beyond individual leaders. Along the way, Michael shares insights on volunteer leadership, organisational culture, student representation, and why the best leaders focus less on being heroes and more on leaving lasting foundations for others to build upon.

Congratulations to @anustudents, winner of Best Advocacy Initiative at the Student Experience Network Awards 2025 for their impactful campaign, Guilty by Absence: When a Parking Fine Becomes a Criminal Record at ANU.

After uncovering that more than 30 students per month were being criminally prosecuted over unpaid parking fines without direct notification, ANUSA took action to expose and challenge a deeply flawed system impacting student welfare, employment opportunities, and visa outcomes.

Despite repeated attempts to work directly with the university to improve communication processes, the issue persisted. ANUSA responded through creative legal advocacy, manually monitoring court listings, contacting affected students, offering legal support, and advocating in court to help prevent convictions.

The initiative also leveraged the power of student media and public advocacy, working with student media outlet Woroni and national media outlets to raise awareness and increase pressure for systemic change.

The campaign directly prevented 74 students from receiving criminal convictions for minor parking offences, protecting them from potentially serious impacts on employment, visas, and future opportunities. Today, ANUSA continues to monitor court listings monthly, ready to step in and support students if needed.

Through persistence, legal expertise, and student-centred advocacy, the campaign highlighted the importance of fairness, transparency, and institutional accountability in supporting students.
