The Session will showcase the Finalists of the Best Advocacy Initiative in the 2025 Student Experience Network Awards.

ANUSA – Guilty by Absence: When a Parking Fine Becomes a Criminal Record at ANU. Justice parked by ANUSA Legal Service

The Guilty by Absence initiative by ANUSA Legal Service tackled a systemic issue at ANU where students were unknowingly receiving criminal convictions for unpaid parking fines due to reliance on outdated postal addresses and the university’s refusal to use student emails. ANUSA monitored court listings, notified affected students, and acted in court to seek adjournments, allowing students to pay fines and avoid convictions. The campaign was amplified through media coverage, creating reputational pressure on ANU, which ultimately led to a lasting change in practice, with student names no longer appearing on court lists and fines now being communicated via email. In total, 74 students were protected from unfair criminalisation, while the initiative also raised awareness of student rights and legal support, promoting a fairer, safer campus culture.

DUSA – Extension and Special Consideration Awareness Campaign

The Extension and Special Consideration Awareness Campaign by DUSA addressed a critical student knowledge gap where many students missed opportunities for extensions or special consideration due to lack of awareness, misinformation, or confusing processes. The campaign employed a creative, multi-platform strategy centred around “Patch” the bear mascot, combining on-campus activations, social media, email, and a dedicated webpage to provide clear, engaging, and memorable information. Activities included interactive games, giveaways, and face-to-face advocacy, supported by marketing and student engagement teams. The campaign successfully increased awareness and confidence in accessing academic support, reaching over 27,000 digital users, engaging hundreds of students directly on campus, and fostering proactive help-seeking behaviours, with early indicators showing improved preparedness, documentation, and timely applications. It effectively transformed a complex administrative process into an approachable, inclusive, and student-centred experience.

QUT Guild – It’s Not Just About Numbers: Creating More Meaningful Connections and Building Confidence

The initiative “It’s not just about numbers: Creating more meaningful connections and building confidence” focused on strengthening student advocacy by improving support for students navigating academic and personal challenges. In Semester 1, 2025, the program aimed to enhance the effectiveness of advocates through better case management and internal routines while building stronger, more meaningful connections with students. Strategies included developing a structured events program, marketing plan, new case note system, and internal feedback mechanisms. Outcomes showed significant improvements, with desired student outcomes increasing from 79% to 92% and overall satisfaction exceeding 95%, reflecting the program’s success in empowering students and delivering more effective, personalised support.

TUSA – Student Legal Service – Pathways to Permanent Residency Information Sessions

The Student Legal Service – Pathways to Permanent Residency Information Sessions initiative at the University of Tasmania provided international students with clear, accurate, and timely guidance on post-graduate visas and pathways to permanent residency, particularly following changes to the Australian Government’s Migration Strategy in 2023. Delivered in 2024 across Hobart and Launceston campuses, the sessions combined expert presentations from government departments and migration lawyers with live Q&A opportunities, ensuring students could address personal concerns. The strategy included collaboration with the SLS Committee, International Student Advisors, and external legal experts, supported by extensive promotion and free access to ensure inclusivity. Outcomes included over 300 attendees, increased student confidence and engagement, referrals to migration law clinics, and strengthened partnerships, ultimately empowering international students to navigate complex migration pathways and plan for their futures.
