SESSION OVERVIEW 

The purpose of this session to to create a space for discussion regarding NUS approach to collective advocacy, the impact of recent sector wide advocacy and to identify whether and how collective advocacy by student-led organisations can achieve greater impact for students. 

Ashlyn Horton, President of the National Union of Students (NUS) will provide of overview of how NUS has approached collective advocacy in the last year. What have been the successes and challenges faced and how could these be overcome in the future.

David Sims, General Manager of QUT Guild will provide an overview of the collective advocacy being undertaken to influence the transition to student led organisations recieving 40% of SSAF. What have been the successes and challenges faced and how could these be overcome in the future.

This will be followed by Breakout Session to answer the following key questions:

  • What would stronger, more coordinated advocacy between student-led organisations look like in practice? 
  • What barriers are stopping us from being more effective together? 
  • What role should NUS and individual student unions/guilds play in sector wide advocacy? 
  • How do we make sure student voices are central — and not lost — in sector-wide negotiations? 
  • If we could do one thing differently in the next 12 months to strengthen collective advocacy, what should it be?
