About The Role

The purpose of this position is to:

• Provide confidential advice on academic and wellbeing issues affecting student success, and support access to welfare programs that alleviate hardship.
• Strengthen partnerships with community service providers to grow welfare offerings available to Deakin students.
• Contribute to strategic, systemic and educational projects led by the Student Advocacy & Support Service.

Key Responsibilities

Advocacy Service Provision
• Deliver timely and accurate procedural advice and support via face to face, phone and email
interaction with students on university processes.
• Assist students who are required to respond to formal Academic Integrity and Academic
Progress correspondence and provide support at Review meetings.
• Escalate complex cases to Advocates or Senior Advocates with appropriate documentation and
context.
• Maintain current knowledge of and compliance with Deakin’s Regulations, Policies and
Procedures and Higher Education legislation, statutory requirements, ethical standards to
ensure they are utilised in the best interests of students.
• Work with the Advocacy Manager to ensure adherence to relevant legislation, Deakin regulation
and policy as well as DUSA policies and procedures.
• Develop and maintain excellent relationships with key stakeholders including Deakin University
staff, particularly regarding university support services, and process leads.

Welfare Service Provision
• Provide support to students facing financial hardship or wellbeing concerns including referrals to
internal and external support services for students.
• Conduct eligibility assessments for welfare programs ensuring a compassionate and empathetic
approach.
• Initiate and maintain partnerships with community organisations such as food aid providers and
culturally specific organisations to enhance DUSA’s welfare offering.

Administration & Strategic Projects
• Contribute to case management administration by maintaining accurate, timely, and confidential
records.
• Work collaboratively with the Financial Wellbeing Coordinator to plan, implement, and evaluate
programs that alleviate student financial hardship (e.g. cost-of-living initiatives).
• Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of a range of activities and
projects providing welfare support, education and awareness, research and evaluation and
internal policy and system development.

Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) was formed in 2001 with the amalgamation of five different
student associations across all the Deakin campuses. DUSA is run by students, for students, and is
independent from the University. They aim to provide students with the No1 University Experience by delivering
programs and services that make a difference to Deakin students as they navigate through their time at
university
